Copper / Brass Radiator Rebuilding Service

A radiator rebuild can be performed when a radiator’s core is in good condition but the solder bonds began to fail. A lot of today’s radiators are failing prematurely because of poor quality manufacturing by radiator factories all around the world, in order to cut manufacturing costs they have cut quality and the bottom line is affecting the integrity. At J&R our radiator repair technicians…

The process of rebuilding a copper/brass radiator includes:

  • Removing the side channels (on down flow radiators)
  • Removing the radiator tanks
  • Removing the header plates
  • Cleaning and re tinning every tube to ensure a perfect solder bond to the header plate.
  • Re attaching the radiator tanks.
  • Re soldering all connections. (hose necks, filler necks and oil coolers)
  • Re attaching side channels (on down flow radiators).
  • Pressure testing.
  • Preparing for paint.
  • Applying radiator paint.
  • Bead blasting the radiator tanks, header plates and side channels to prepare the surfaces for re tinning.
  • Performing a rod out procedure on every tube to make sure all debris is removed and coolant flow is restored to 100%.
  • Re tinning the header plates and necessary areas of the radiator tanks and side channels to ensure a perfect solder bond.
  • Re attaching the header plates to the core and re soldering every tube to the header, providing extra tube re enforcement when necessary.

Copper / Brass Radiator Recoring Service

Plastic / Aluminum Radiator Services

Since about 1990, Most car and light truck radiators are built out of aluminum and plastic instead of copper and brass.  While the aluminum design gives longer life, and better cooling, there are also some major disadvantages.  The main disadvantage of building a radiator out of plastic is that over time, plastic can become brittle and break.  A radiator is subjected to major extremes of temperature. Swings from 0 degrees or lower depending on outside temperature, to 240 degrees or more, as scalding hot antifreeze comes out of the engine at 40 gallons per minute.  When you consider the millions of gallons of engine coolant that circulates through a radiator during its life, it is truly amazing that a radiator lives as long as it does.

The major problem with a plastic / aluminum radiator is a failure of the plastic, usually in the area directly by the inlet neck.  This is where the hottest engine coolant hits the plastic, and over time, the stresses of extreme temperatures take its toll and the plastic tank will develop a leak.  Another problem is that overtime the sealing gaskets between the aluminum and plastic can fail, especially here in Minnesota with our extremely low winter temperatures. When it’s cold, the material can contract or shrink causing the radiator to leak. At J&R we have you covered. We have the latest equipment needed and are experienced in replacing your radiator’s cracked plastic tank or leaking gaskets. We can give you the option to repair your current radiator. We can save you money over purchasing a new replacement radiator and add years of service to your radiator.

The process of replacing a plastic tank and/or seals on a Plastic / Aluminum include:

  • Removing the radiator tank(s).
  • Removing the old gasket(s).
  • Installing new gasket(s).
  • Inserting the new plastic tank
  • Pressure testing.
  • Performing a rod out procedure on every tube to make sure all debris is removed and coolant flow is restored to 100%.
  • Using the tabbed header machine, applying the correct amount of pressure and re crimping the header(s).
